2022 was filled with a lot of great entertainment! I, personally, really got into TV and caught up on everything from Game of Thrones to Breaking Bad. I also made many reading goals and watched a lot of movies, but that’s normal.
I wanted to share three 2022 releases – a movie, TV show, and book – that I think are very underrated and that people should watch or read (because you probably haven’t…maybe). Maybe you haven’t even heard of these. Either way, they were good enough to get me here, I guess.
Here they are!
Underrated Film: Emily
This was a film I had on my radar because of 2 reasons. My degree is in English Literature and therefore I am a fan of the Bronte sisters, Emily Bronte, and Wuthering Heights, so I was curious. And two…I have a crush on Oliver Jackson Cohen, a co-star of the film. It stars Emma Mackey, who was amazing as Emily!
It tells the story of Emily Bronte’s life. I knew going into this film that it probably wasn’t going to be 100% accurate because honestly, we don’t know a lot about Emily and what we do know would be a 20-30 minute film with a lot less of the theatrics. So I knew what was coming and I’m happy with all the extra tidbits and changes.
It was a great period peice with the drama and romance we are used to with even a small supernatural aspect (like Wuthering Heights). The acting was great and the music was beautiful. Truly! It’s on the longer side in terms of duration but it went by quickly for me. Take a look into this, especially if you like Wuthering Heights, Jane Austen work, or period pieces.
Underrated TV Show: Midnight At The Pera Palace (Netflix)
So I already have a blog post dedicated to this show. That’s how much I wanted to share it, I guess. So here I am again.
Here are the basics: It’s a Turkish show on Netflix. It’s 1 season in (8 episodes). It tells the tale of a modern day journalist traveling back in time to the Pera Palace hotel in Istanbul 1919 where she must stop historical disasters from unfolding. It’s romance, mystery, drama, historical fiction, and comedy.
I feel that people who read romance, mystery, and/or historial fiction, would really like this show. It plays out like something you’d read in a book. It’s pretty clean in terms of violence, sex, drugs, etc. Not a lot of that here. This is actually the first piece of Turkish media I’ve ever seen and I’m pretty impressed.
Underrated Book: The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis
This was one of the first books I got from my Book of the Month subscription I started at the beginning of the year (which I highly recommend by the way).
Now that I am here writing about it, it kind of reminds me of what I was just talking about – Midnight At The Pera Palace! Just in terms of historical fiction and different timelines. This story takes place in 2 different timelines of 2 women at the Frick Mansion, a real historical location. Similar to the above mentioned show, there is also romance, mystery, and historical fiction that can be found in this story. I enjoyed it a lot.
I think it got some recogonition through it’s selection at BOTM, but I think people who don’t have that subscription would like it too.
I hope some of you check out this film, TV show, or book. If you do, let me know what you think! Hope everyones 2023 is starting off amazing! Thanks for reading!
